3 Reasons Why We All Need Mentors

Are you not sure how having a mentor can benefit you? Do you think that having a mentor is only for people who are new to the workforce? Everyone deserves the opportunity to maximize their potential and move their ideas to action with the support of mentors. Three (3) reasons why we all need mentors are:

  1. Expertise
  2. Perspective
  3. Intentional growth

#1: Expertise

The dictionary defines mentors as experienced and trusted advisors. They bring a specialization in a specific area in your life such as your industry of work, health, finances, or spirituality. Mentors are passionate about their area of expertise and want to pass on their skills, knowledge, and wisdom. A Chinese Proverb says that to know the road ahead, ask those coming back. The experiences and expertise of mentors enhance your growth and development opportunities.

#2: Perspective

It can be challenging to take a step back in a situation that you are invested in and passionate about. You may not be able to discuss the issue with colleagues, friends, or family who are also close to the situation. Mentors are a few steps ahead of you on their journey and can offer perspective and remind you of the big picture. Their only investment is in your success and they can provide you with a valuable and objective point of view.

#3 Intentional Growth

Are you leading your growth or is your growth leading you? If you let growth happen, you become a part of someone else’s plan and purpose, rather than your own. Mentors can assist you with identifying your strengths and areas for improvement. They can support you with developing an action plan and serve as your accountability partner to increase your rate of success in achieving your goals.

Having mentors allows you to obtain experience, gain perspective, and grow with intention to achieve your goals and maximize your potential. What is one reason why you have or want to have mentors? Share your thoughts and experiences, join the conversation below.
