How To Prepare for Change
Are you about to be part of an organizational, professional, or personal change? Are you excited and/or anxious about the process? Are you unsure what to expect? Change can be hard for everyone, even when the reason is clear. One of the most important steps to prepare for change is to engage change agents—your champions of change. Get ready for your journey by using the Producktivity® Principles: Identify. Connect. Organize.
Step 1: Identify – A change agent models the attitude and behaviors necessary for successful transformation. What characteristics are needed? If a change is occurring in an organization, such as a restructuring, a characteristic to seek may include the ability to create buy-in across departments. For a professional change, such as a promotion, it may require mentorship from someone who has been successful in a similar position. If a change is occurring in your personal life, such as weight loss, one characteristic needed from a change agent may include the ability to persevere when challenges arise.
Step 2: Connect – Friends, family members, colleagues, and members of the community may “wear multiple hats” in a relationship. Clarify the role change agents will play throughout the process. Do you need them to model trust, provide encouragement, celebrate successes? Is their role holding themselves and others accountable, effectively communicating the change, conducting training sessions?
Step 3: Organize – Change doesn’t happen alone. Introduce change agents to one another to allow them to build rapport and relationships. Create a peer network and plan regular times to meet. Allow everyone to provide updates, lessons learned, and advice to one another.
Using the Producktivity® Principles allows you to effectively prepare for change by identifying change agents and involving them in the process. Who are your agents of change? Share your thoughts and experiences, join the conversation below.
