3 Ways to Move Your 2018 Goals Forward
Have you joined the 92% of people who are not able to achieve their New Year’s resolutions? Are you feeling disappointed and unsure what to do now? We can all relate to stumbling along the way to reaching our goals. It is “okay” to slip up. A friend once said to me, “If you trip on the stairs, do you catch yourself or just throw yourself down the stairs because you already tripped anyway?” You get back up, learn from the setback, make adjustments, and keep on walking. It is time to evaluate and move your 2018 goals forward using the Producktivity® Principles: Identify. Connect. Organize.
Step 1: Identify – Write down the goals established for 2018. What is your “Why?” What value will they provide? What led you to choose these over others? Was your focus on spending more time with your friends and family, earning more money, to travel, to improve your health? A strong “why” will re-energize your commitment when the initial excitement and motivation wear off. Did you have the opportunity to reflect on 2017 to assist with planning your goals for 2018? Step 2: Connect – What has held you back from achieving your goals? Being aware of obstacles will connect you to next steps to get you back on track. Is it time, energy, and/or interest level? Reflect on whether you set the right goals. It is “okay” to modify your goals. Is it you don’t want to work on it because it is too overwhelming? That is where I was with my health. I lost weight and felt great and still had additional weight to lose, but I got too comfortable. I maintained for a while, but then started to slide. I didn’t want to go and weigh in, because I would have to face where I am and what was still ahead of me on my road to improve my health. I went back to my “why” and focused on the first step I could take to get back on track. I went to a meeting and got support from friends to re-energize my weight loss goal.
Step 3: Organize – Once you have committed to your goals and established your “why,” the final step is determining how you will achieve them. Author Brian Tracy suggests mindstorming. Creating a list of at least 20 ways to accomplish your goal helps you to see that it is possible and that there are many ways to get there. Pace yourself. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Small actions each day will build habits and the feeling of accomplishment on a daily basis will motivate you to keep going. What is the first action you will take this week to work toward your goals? Schedule it, mark it on your work and personal calendars, and to build in accountability tell a supportive friend, colleague, or family member who will ask you about it next week.
Using the Producktivity® Principles allows you to move your goals forward. Set the right goals for you, strengthen your why, determine what is holding you back, and take your next step.
