BSC Tips & Techniques
Dream Big
Becky S. Corbett, MSW, ACSW & Emily Tevault, MBA
To reach your full potential, dream. Then, dream bigger. It starts with a dream. Dreaming gives you focus, motivates you and moves you to action. Below are ten (10) tips and techniques to support your vision, and to get you started on the path to dreaming big. They provide a framework for achieving your dreams. Learn how to dream, select a dream, be passionate about your dream and implement your dream. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
1 – Vision Your Dream
The daily list of things to accomplish can weigh us down and give us tunnel vision. Creating a vision gives you the opportunity to connect your priorities with your ultimate goals. Discover the balance between the day-to-day details and the big picture. Take a step back and focus on your values and dream. A clearly defined vision is meant to inspire you to look to the future and move forward. Ask yourself, “What is the desired outcome? What do I want to accomplish in 5, 10, 15 years?” Dream big. Then, dream bigger.
2 – Dream BIG Dreams by Using Producktivity® Principle: Identify, Strategy: Brainstorm
The sky is the limit for your dream. Brainstorming allows you to identify all of your dream possibilities. Determine the most effective setting for you to brainstorm. The ideal brainstorming session allows for all ideas to be captured in a supportive atmosphere. Brainstorming frees you to be creative and releases you from doing things the way you have always done them.
3 – Connect Your Dream Components by Incorporating Producktivity® Principle: Connect, Strategies: Dream Big & Analyze
There are many pieces of the puzzle to create your dream. Does your dream play to your strengths and interests? Will your dream bring you satisfaction and fulfillment? How will your dream support your needs, your family, friends and community? Stretch out of your comfort zone by dreaming big. The bigger the dream, the greater the stretch and the more people, resources, time and trade-offs you will need to make. Your dream needs to connect to your strengths, purpose and definition of success for you to achieve it.
4 – Reflect and Journal to Select Your Dream
Taking time to reflect allows you to pause, learn from experiences, generate new ideas, transition and make intentional decisions. Where do you go to dream? Find a place that is comfortable and away from distractions. Capture your reflections in writing and own your dream using our free intentional growth resource.
5 – Be Passionate About Your Dream
Dreams give us purpose and allow us to live a meaningful life. Every time we picture Walt Disney’s Castle, we think about, where dreams really do come true. We reflect and realize, we have and continue to live our dreams. Dreams require commitment and passion. If you aren’t passionate about your dream, who will be? Believe in your dream.
6 – Motivate Yourself with Inspirational Quotes to Reach Your Dream
Where does your inspiration come from? Quotes can provide you with valuable inspiration. Use Websites such as BrainyQuote and GoodReads to find quotes that support your dream. Once you identify quotes that inspire you, put them in places that will help keep you motivated; on the refrigerator, in your office, by your bed, on your mirror.
7 – Establish Dream Outcomes by Implementing Producktivity® Principle: Organize, Strategy: Plan
A plan provides you a road map to achieve your dream. Sometimes a plan can be equated to not being flexible. However, when you have a plan, you can build in where and when to be flexible. Along the way, your dream will evolve and may possibly change, and that is ok. There are different roads to take along your dream journey.
8 – Form Your Dream Team
Nobody does anything alone, and you need support. As Mother Teresa said, You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together we can do great things. Create an inner circle and surround yourself with people you know, like and trust. Identify people who give you honest feedback and have complementary strengths to support you. As the leader of the dream, your team needs to trust you and your vision before they will support your dream.
9 – Put Your Dream To The Test
Leadership author and speaker John C. Maxwell defines a dream as a picture and blueprint of a person’s purpose and potential. As certified John C. Maxwell coaches, speakers, and trainers we have the opportunity to teach from John’s book Put Your Dream to the Test. John outlines 10 thought-provoking questions to help you see and seize your dream. From ownership—clarity—reality—passion—pathway—people—cost—tenancity—fulfillment—to significance, John takes us on a journey to commit to and fulfil our dream.
10 – Commit to Your Dream
Your dream determines your priorities, and your priorities deserve time on your calendar—daily.
Build accountability into achieving your dream with an accountability partner, a mentor, a coach or participating in a mastermind group. Your dream is your why, which will keep you motivated on your journey to move you to action.
Having a dream gives you purpose and supports you reaching your full potential. Be intentional about dreaming big, moving to action and implementing your vision. When was the last time you allowed yourself to dream?
