Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was observed to honor fallen soldiers after the Civil War. General John A. Logan declared May 30, 1868, as a day of remembrance. Decoration Day was originally only to commemorate fallen Civil War soldiers, but after World War II, all American battles were included. In 1968, Congress made Memorial Day the last Monday in May.
